The result of our collaboration with youth is the “Love Shouldn’t Hurt” program.Love Shouldn’t Hurt is an awareness, intervention, and prevention initiative that addresses the serious issue of abuse in dating relationships.Adolscents and adults are often unaware how regularly dating violence occurs. In a nationwide survey, 9.8 percent of high school students report being hit, slapped, or physically hurt on purpose by their boyfriend or girlfriend in the 12 months prior to the survey. We are not only making a difference in the lives of young people affected by dating abuse today, but perhaps more importantly, STAR peer leaders are learning positive lessons in leadership that will foster the development of socially committed adults possessing faith in their own abilities to effect long-term social change and to achieve greater social equality that is not constrained by race, class, color, faith, sexual orientation or gender. Teen Dating Violence is a pattern of emotional, verbal, sexual, or physical abuse used by one person in a current or past dating relationship to exert power and control over another when one or both of the partners is a teenager.

The program's goal is to interrupt patterns of violence by educating teens on healthy behaviors and choices for their dating relationships and friendships. They also provide tools to cultivate healthy relationships and become a resource for teens who may need help. Our program also offers classroom and parent education, educator training and school policy assistance, as well as programs for professionals who work with youth in the community.Teen Dating Violence (TDV), also known as Adolescent Relationship Abuse (ARA), can be defined as violence and/or abuse among two adolescents, ages 10-24 in a current, past and/or potential romantic relationship, including physical, verbal, emotional, sexual, economic, technological, and stalking, where there is an imbalance of power and a pattern of coercion over time.More than half of the victims of violence and abuse had their first experience in adolscence, which further increases negative health outcomes across the lifespan.
